A fantastic (for-pay) site for song writing ideas is https://www.hooktheory.com/. They show you how chords and progressions work in a lot of common songs so you can write a song that is simultaneously musically identifiable and uniquely yours. I love its comparative approach. “You’ve heard this idea before in _____ song.”

    No, I don’t work there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ethanol is a great solvent. I’ve been around the “chemically purified” alcohol. A Polish coworker of mine (from the 80s, so this was Iron Curtain time) would pour that stuff in his Cokes or coffees. “It won’t hurt you- I’m still here, see?”

Also, based on the petroleum naptha description (virgin light naptha), the two could be the same, with the assay on Tun-O-Wash more explicit than Deoxit’s.

Here’s the appropriate section from Tun-O-Wash, which is what I’ve been using 44 years. The organics in this are generally lower molecular weight than mineral oil’s but has the same propulsion gas. Eh. Either one’ll do ya.

this would imply to me, for example the pitch discrimination, that no matter how many years someone plays, it doesnt mean theyโ€™ll gain transcribing skills, just from playing and practicing songs etc.

Agreed; transcription is very hard. Very. And involves all three discrimination skills and much more. Example: “Was that note hammered or picked?” You must learn to hear the difference. I’m still getting there.

    I like specialization too!

With years of practice, some mechanical things have improved.
For some techniques, five minutes of instruction and correction have allowed significant improvement.
With five minutes of knowledge transfer, many ideas have been corrected or cemented.

With years of repetition of the above things, I have gained “instant” access to them. They are easier and smoother.
With years of practice, some different mechanical techniques have not improved to the degree that I want.

The paper’s measurement of musical ability didn’t include instrument technique; it measured pitch, melody, and rhythm discrimination. You can get better at such discrimination but probably not through unrelated instrument practice (unless, for example, your goal is to learn to bend in key ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).

    Happy Anniversary!
My Peavey Tracer is a fun hotrod, too. I’ll have to check the pickup I replaced. It’s been a few years. It’s an excellent guitar for swapping out pickups. Muy thin neck, too. I didn’t know anybody else had a Tracer. ๐Ÿ™‚

What a great ear she has and to get you a pickup for an anniversary present– very nice.

I’ve used Digital Performer since 2000 (I think. Maybe 99). I started on version 2.72. I liked Performer because it had fantastic Tool Tips that hid the manual within them. Those are gone since DP4. Now it’s just another DAW. I know my way around the menus. The menus only make sense if you’ve used the tool for a lifetime. They have preferences in 3 different spots!! I could switch, yes. But I won’t because then it would be someone else’s idea of “a better way” and Digital Performer works fine for me now. Howwever, in general, computers are the only tool that makes the task harder. (Live being the exception?)
