Last week I changed the strings on my ESP-1000. I seized the opportunity to flip around the bridge saddle for ease of access. I can now reach the screws from the pickup area instead of squeezing the screwdriver in between the bridge and the saddle. After flipping it I had the opportunity (read: responsibility) to re-setup the guitar.
I used Amplitube’s UltraTuner to first tune the string, and then adjust the saddle while plucking the 12th fret. UltraTuner has an oscilloscope-like graph that shows you the sound wave. It is a far more accurate way to give feedback on how close to in-tune you are. When it displays a standing wave (not shifting to the left or right), then you are truly in tune.
If you setup your own guitar (or want to learn how), I highly recommend using a tuner that displays the sound wave. I now notice how much clearer the harmonic intervals sound – including those starting near the top of the neck like perfect 4ths, 5ths, and minor 6ths starting on G on the 3rd fret.
TL;DR: I flipped my saddle, used an oscilloscope waveform display to tune, and now love the clearer and more consistent sounding harmonic intervals.
Hey, thanks for the tip!
