Going to a george lynch clinic at a music store! wow, soooo amazing. it is sponsored by ESP. now I gotta figure out, what one question could I ask, if I get the chance to ask something in-person, for one of the all-time great guitar heroes.

      you could ask…
we’ve all heard the story about you showing randy rhoads the tapping sequence he used in flying high again – is there anything randy showed you that you adopted into your playing?

      🤘🏽🎸🤘🏽

rock and roll ain't pretty; that's why they picked us to play it.

For lack of anything else I can think of, I might ask how he got so dependent/used to/proficient with using his pinky. I had a lesson from him and one thing I noticed, he uses his pinky when soloing or shredding way more than the average player.

I also remember an interview post Dokken where he said he was happy he didn’t have to spend hours practicing sweep picked arpeggios. You might ask him if his playing has gone back to that style.

amazzzzing clinic, i highly recommend going to any clinic, its gonna be a loong drive back but very worth it! sooo awesome seeing a guitar hero in such an intimate environment and watching the meet & greet, and also just to be surrounded by a bunch of die hard metalheads too. hope i can jot down some observations in a few days but yeah, definitely for such a guitarist who comes anywhere within road trip distance, go see & meet them! 🎸 🤘

he plugged straight into a macbook pro and into monitor speakers (frfr) for the first half of the clinic, it was running new modeler (plugin) software he said was recommended or signatured by tosin abasbi, “neural” something something?

Some observations on guitar god George Lynch!

The music part of the clinic was him improv jamming over backing tracks which was amazing to see. The tracks were unfinished demo songs for his upcoming album, he said these tracks were still in the experimental stage. After 2-3 tracks he stopped and admitted he was sweating and it wasnt because of the lights, he was really rockin out while playing (he was standing up, vs other clinics where guitarists sit down). Just like we should all do 😇 Rock out like crazy, reallly get into it.

Since Lynch plays by feel rather than theory and the stage audio wasn’t dialed in, plus he said he didn’t have anything pre-planned to play, which is how he normally jams, his playing wasn’t perfect either, which was also great to see. His licks and patterns and playing was amazing, with great feel, and lightening fast. But, he didn’t lock into the right key or the right groove for the first handful of bars in each song, the licks didn’t immediately “fit the song”. Just like we all do when jamming, play some stuff to see what fits the track (except we play at 10% of his tempo, and 0.1% of his style, 😜 ) and after the first part of “finding how this goes” then the licks kind of lock into place.

He explained that he doesn’t play memorized licks and doesn’t practice memorized licks. He said he doesn’t really know what he does, he lets his fingers do their thing, except that he tries not to repeat himself (like, get locked into playing the same licks). Obviously this is from his 50,000 hours of guitar playing or whatever… I guess he is playing in pattern shapes, rather than moving licks around. For example. In the new course around week 20 or so, Doug introduces the concept of the pentagon playing shape, and Lynch’s licks probably fit into these (he wasn’t playing so linearly that night, like he has done in the past, he would stay on part of the neck then jump to another position). In Sarah’s Easy Modes, she has the 3 string shapes, and Lynch’s jamming probably fits well into those shapes too. It would be fascinating to study some of Lynch’s solos and look at it with these kind of smaller geometric shapes.

Lots of pinky usage for sure. He also changed to open position playing (I think that is what Doug calls it, in the final level of the course). So his pinky was spanning to the 5th or 6th fret distance. One of his licks he did a tremelo slide with his pinky so it was going like 5-6-5-6-5-… (or maybe it was 4-5-4-5..) which turned out to be a really cool lick. I haven’t spent much time at all on the open position drills and this reminds me that I should, because it can create really cool melody.

In the Q&A part of the clinic there were some hilarious comments. Now that guitar playing and metal is really underground, you know everyone attending was a die-hard metalhead. At one point someone yelled out a question about Lynch being in Ozzy’s band, he kind of said, meh it wasn’t really gonna happen cause Sharon didn’t like him much, and a ton of people in the crowd simultaneously shouted out “Sharonnnn!!!” LOL so funny. Other side comments he made were about quirky behaviors of some of those 80s rock musicians but I wont repeat them because they were.. 🤭 😧 LOL hilarious. Also he mentioned the cost of one of his albums which took the longest to record (sorry I forget his titles, he has so many projects, one from the 90s ) was something like $550,000 which was interesting that it would have been the 💰 equivalent of two or three house mortgages to produce one side-project album (and in recent decades I can’t imagine that would be recouped from record sales because they have declined so much?).

There were some grade-school aged kids there, some of them got guitars signed, so don’t worry, there are new guitar players out there for the future generation. He was super generous about signing everything at a meet-n-greet table and giving everyone a chance to talk to him even though it took like 2 hrs (I waited til the end).

I had maybe 30 seconds to ask him a question, so since he is also a guitar luthier, and also the sales rep from ESP guitars was there, I asked about headless guitars. I asked why they had disappeared since I believe they are superior designs, have superior bridges, and were prominently played by EVH for awhile, but more recently gibson bought steinberger and essentially killed the products. The ESP rep said the obvious reason, because guitar players go for traditional looks (rather than function). Lynch mentioned he simply hadn’t spent time trying out headless, he wasn’t into the tone of those players who were playing headless when it was getting more popular (actually this was more of a dig at not liking EVH’s playing in the Sammy era). So, my curiosity about headless design continues. I wish someone would ask EVH this question directly.

It is often not celebrated but George Lynch does have a solid luthier business.. sure would be amazing to have one of these.

I cant check facebook because I block zuckerberg at my router but they were live streaming it and that is probably it. here I found it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27QExUuyzyY The place was packed.

let me take a sec to unfortunatey criticize the sound/video guys who were doing the live work.. the stage setup wasnt good, camera angles were not good, the audio levels were really bad (his backing tracks were demos, not normalized, but they were not riding the levels like they should have) and way too loud.. Rather than focus so crazily on “omg we gotta live stream this” they should have put the effort into “omg we have to stage & record this well, then later we can quickly edit and post it within a couple days”. it’s a different mentality to focus on setting up a proper stage for recording a presentation, vs. put all time & effort into getting live-av-switching with black magic box and various mixers etc etc to work on the spot. It was obvious within the first couple mins that they had setup the view angles badly for his playing, they should have adjusted rapidly rather than stick with it. I think some parents took their kids outside, for a couple tracks which were crazy loud, several families left kind of suddenly, and then they came back later. I had my foam earplugs in and still thought it was too hot (then I’d have to take em out, for the Q&A parts, and put them back in, etc). Small store and a zillion watts of PA cranked way up, why?? Lynch had two small studio monitors on a shelf above the laptop for himself, if he needed louder monitoring, they should blast those, not the fans’ ears.

Very lucky that I had a good viewing angle to his playing, from the center of the audience 😀 Get to these clinics early! I’m not visible in the audience shots because of the camera angles it seems.

Here’s a screenshot at one of the open position licks I was talking about. 33:50 of the yt video but theres other spots too. I’m so glad that I was able to go to this & that Lynch put in the effort for the fans.

Science says gig-going can help you live longer and increases wellbeing
Fortnightly gig attendance could extend life expectancy by NINE years
Wellbeing increased by 21% from just 20 minutes of gig-time, compared to just 10% for yoga and only 7% for dog-walking
O2 commissioned scientific study reveals the power of live music on the human body and mind
Attending a live music gig once a fortnight could have life expectancy rocketing by nine years due to its power to positively impact wellbeing, new scientific research reveals.

The scientific study by O2 and Patrick Fagan, expert in behavioural science and Associate Lecturer at Goldsmith’s University, reveals there is an alternative cure for those struggling to find their Mr. Brightside, and it can be found at your local music venue – with just 20 minutes of gig-time resulting in a significant 21% increase in feelings of wellbeing. Added to this, additional scholarly research directly links high levels of wellbeing with a lifespan increase of nine years pointing to a direct link between gig-going and longevity.

The findings come off the back of bespoke psychometric and heart-rate tests at a range of wellbeing activities – including gig-going, yoga and dog walking. The gig experience increased participants feelings of wellbeing by 21% – with key markers across the happiness spectrum showing increases, including feelings of self-worth (+25%) and closeness to others (+25%) whilst mental stimulation climbed by an impressive 75%.

I havent yet located the link to the actual study however.

So, now I’m wondering what the reference is. How does it compare to people who go dancing without live music. And do people who enjoy their concert seated or even standing experience the same benefits as those who engage in the mosh pit?

That’s what I’d like to see in a doctors prescription: “Ok sir, I urge you to engage in a regular mosh pit. There will be a therapy session scheduled in my practice every Tuesday 3PM and Thursday 2PM, hosted by this local death metal band. I’d recommend you attend both. If problems persist, we’ll try to schedule another session on Mondays. I trust you’ll feel better though. As preparation I recommend you learn the lyrics. Oh yeah, before I forget. Here is a prescription for cough syrup as well.”

Yeah for sure. Well live music always makes me feel good. (I keep the earplugs handy)

Anyway I found the “research” author’s web site the study I bet was a hype-marketing paper, kind of obvious anyway since it was funded by O2. The reason I couldnt find the paper is because there is no paper, certainly not a peer reviewed one, but google the title and it sure got a lot of pop news coverage a few years ago. just another “pay to play” situation, instead this time more like “pay to publish”.

I like the idea anyways though. “Mosh for health” 😀

here is the band setlist I grabbed after watching Motorbäbe in a small club recently (Motorhead tribute). Totally great show. The bassist really smokes on the vocals too. so glad i went to see them, cheered me right up 😀 second time i’ve seen them, they play on sunset strip regularly. the show was only $5 ! 💯

      Photo-on-2-21-20-at-2.42-PM

the opening band was a smaller one, another tribute, Bad Religion, the lead guy was doing a great job of acting like a nutty drunken vocalist (he wasnt drunk, just acting). Grabbed their setlist too because Im not familiar with those songs and a couple are cool jams. great visual show from the antics as well as great guitar solos. ahhh there was some moshing which was unfortunate since the huge gorilla’s came out of nowhere to jump in and then i got punched in the neck, ouch.
