About a month ago my big red Focusrite interface died, at first the leds would kind of flash strangely but not recognised as a USB device anymore, then no led at all. (Scarlett 18i8 1st gen) Unfortunately it is 3 yrs old so out of warrantee. Focusrite suggested I could send it back for repair (and I pay shipping) for a repair cost of something like $190. Well that’s kind of the same cost as a working used one, or half the price of a new one.

So I’m wondering if anyone has heard of taking an interface apart to diy fix something simple. I checked the wall wart already and it is outputting proper DC. I wonder if the unit’s power jack needs replacing or something (lots of corrosion in my geography so it wouldnt be a mystery). but since I guess most everything else inside is solid state circuit board I’m not sure what else I might be able to check. unfortunately this coincided with the unit updating its firmware from a new focusrite release so I’m not sure if the cpu bricked itself due to beta software or it is a simple hardware electronic failure.

I didnt ask if Focusrite would accept a unit for repair if I’ve already opened it… but doubt I want to pay near $200 to fix a 1st gen model either..

It can go either way with trying to fix stuff like that! If you are OK with risking breaking it on the chance of saving it, go for it. LOL

Whats wrong with this forum software antispam software?. I post things then they erased? Very frustrating.

This is 3rd attempt. Go to join the eevblog electronics forum repair… post photos, here is an example of a guy asking help on a drum machine device.

In fact coincidently, it appears to me Louis is using the $100 focusrite unit himself in his latest right to repair video.

Great resources.. I need to try the simple stuff first and hope it works, take my focusrite to the library to try on another imac. if that still fails I will look towards opening it up.. 🤷🏼‍♂️
