I’m subscribed to Signals Music Studio’s YouTube channel and I’ve seen this video on the playlist but hadn’t gotten to it yet… Definitely one of the best lessons I’ve seen for writing this style of music. Thanks for posting it here and nudging me into finally watching it.

Throughout the entire video I had Steel Panther in my head…

You’re welcome. I find his channel to very informative and never boring on all sorts of subject matter. Even if a person does not write songs this video explains some interesting little bits of detail like as he calls the semi tone “neutral 3rd”, something I have never heard classified as such. That explained to me why I like some artists better than others.

The FretJam channel slso has some fairly unique material.

I don’t know about you but this time has really allowed me to focus and practice music and guitar and finding it really enjoyable.

yeah, great video. Although I got lost when he showed the chords in the scale but didnt really explain them. I guess I will have to get out some paper to figure it out. One thing he glossed over quickly is how he used the A chord instead of Am for some parts because he mentions quick that he took the v and made it a V but he didnt really explain why other than to say “its nice to use dominant here.” Otherwise a great video, I will have to re-watch it again. Not sure about his description of that “Neutral” note, never heard that term before, but I have seen the backwards flat sign before which he shows briefly on the staff, as a microtone indication. Strangely it seems there is not even a character on the extended keyboard which matches the backwards b. (backwards ♭ ) There is also an opposing sign which looks like # but only has one vertical bar, it indicates microtone step up (I think), which I saw used in some modern-classical charts.

About melody variations, since I have been punishing myself going thru a hard theory textbook’s exercises, I wrote a variation exercise and made a youtube video of the result, probably one of the best exercises I’ve gone through in terms of melody creation theory. I think the concept should get much, much more air time. Especially because here on the forum we’ve talked about melody, how to write good ones, many times. My playthru video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7L4WhBOVl_Y Architecting Music. Theme and Variation Composition (vocal, guitar, bass) Unfortunately it is really hard to get any answer whether or not my “exercise” is correct, I’ve asked a couple “educated” musicians and they just say “yeah it sounds good, and is interesting, great” which isn’t exactly a good way to know whether I’m using the technique correctly (let’s just say, I’ll never pay for a Berklee class)..

      I'm an intermediate student of Metal Method. I play seitannic heavy metal. All Kale Seitan! ♯ ♮ ♭ ø ° Δ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬
And on the Seventh Day, Mustaine said: ∇ ⨯ E = - ∂B / ∂t ; and there was Thrash; and it had a ♭3; and it was good.

Live moves in misterious ways 🙂
Saturday I came back after 3 years to check MM. (Moved from Oporto to Lisbon but kept my 2 jobs in the old town which, partially, accounts for this gap)
YesterdayI was assinged a homework on negative harmony…
Today I came back here, unrelated, to find this wonderful video.
This must be some kind of sign.

Thanks ‘ol friend for posting this!

love that mixing major and minor thing.
it probably happens much more often than people think.
and not just in relative major minor.
but when he changed the major third to a minor third i instantly went to dorian.
and was thinking it’s just combining D major pentatonic with D minor pentatonic.
it teeters between mixolydian and dorian.
throw in the flat five and you have the ultimate bluesy rock scale.
      nice lesson and cool tune.
i think i heard that song when i saw ratt; fastway and mama’s boys in 1985.
      🤘🏽🎸

rock and roll ain't pretty; that's why they picked us to play it.

Wow, Joao great to see you again! So how is the Jazz work? Lisbon is a nice place, I could live there for sure. I have been studying again and discovering new channels on Youtube, there is an endless string of new material that I have never seen before if you stumble into them. The “suggested videos” that their app detects seem to work pretty well. So have you been playing live there?

SB, He has a free lesson on Chord tones. Sign up. His exercises should help with fast fretboard, arpeggio, scale and note identification. Regarding if your video is correct, send Tomasso an email. He stated he answers. Spend a few hours on his videos, he has a knack for picking up on little or lesser known subject matter and it explains it pretty well. I will try and find the videos again on melody and post them.

Rotm, I have been using the minor major thing as a leading tone exercise while practicing improvised soloing. It is pretty Chuck Berry or Beatles sounding but doing it to create predictable and memorable ideas so they become second nature. Over Major chords of course, but also the Major 7th. Yesterday I put the looper on a 3 chord sequence of D-A-G then jam over all forms paying close attention to always hitting chord tones, but leading into them with minor 3rd and Major 7th tones. Then throwing in the 2nd. Trying to stay on consonant tones, and correct bends that work over the small basic progression.

I like what fairly simple licks that say Angus does, so closely looking at the minor-major bends he does in soloing are interesting to look at least for me.

Hey, Dave! (hope I still have your name right 🙂
Jazz is coming along, thanks! A growing passion, every day. But then also everyhting else related with guitar.
Since moving to Lisbon my life has been quite hectic as I keep going to Oporto every week to give my lessons there, but I also joined a Jazz school here, close to home a very crazy and wonderful place. We have a combo there and we had our first gig scheduled for Mach 13 … and that was the the date when most schools stopped around here due to Covid 19. But we kept our lessons online, of course. I have a guitar teacher who’s giving me hell, but I kinda love that 🙂
So like you – and all the guys around here, I’m sure! – I’m always learning new things, and never really getting there, but that’s the whole point.
Also more into composing, and doing a revamp of my home studio, too!

Great to came here and chat with you again, my friend!
      I’ll keep checking for sure.

      Best!
      Joao

Wow, Isn’t that a long haul like few hours each way? I never made it up far north.

Yep, it’s a 3-hour trip. So I go on Tuesday morning and return Thursday night. But not now! Now it’s online classes all the way. Not sure until when but I’m going to miss staying more at home 😉
