Another work in progress. I recorded an arrangement of “I Am The Walrus” by The Beatles. I recorded this a bit differently than how I normally record. I have “Beatles: The Complete Scores” and it includes a transcriptinn of Ringo’s drums which I copied into GP6 (I have a GP6 drum RSE called “Fab” which is supposed to be a replica of 60’s era Ludwig drums). I then exported the drum track as a WAV file and imported it into Cakewalk. I then recorded the bass track (again using the transcription of McCartney’s original basslines) and then two rhythm guitar tracks. The cello part was played on my Les Paul using an E-Bow.

I added a guitar solo at the end–I played my Strat with a Fuzz Face and Earthquaker Devices “The Depths” pedal (an optical vibe pedal based on the Uni-Vibe).

I’m trying to find a decent singer to record the vocals (sadly my singing voice is a total train wreck). At the moment, I generated a melody line using GP-6.

My biggest fear is when I die, my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her they cost.

This is a great coincidence because when filming the interview with MAB recently, we talked about “super heavy” songs that don’t seem so heavy anymore, Doug mentioned Spooky Tooth 😀

Dave about your version, for the GP6 drums, I wonder if you have the “accentuation” turned up or how it might improve the groove. I’m not sure what that setting really does. Bass sounds solid. Your solo is way cool. Especially the last measures shredding. Also is the guitar level a little too high?

Here is maybe a hard question.. is the bass and rhythm guitar in this song supposed to be (or do you want it to be) either “laid back” or is it “pressing forward”?

      I'm an intermediate student of Metal Method. I play seitannic heavy metal. All Kale Seitan! ♯ ♮ ♭ ø ° Δ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬
And on the Seventh Day, Mustaine said: ∇ ⨯ E = - ∂B / ∂t ; and there was Thrash; and it had a ♭3; and it was good.

Hey Dave! Would you post a copy of your cover without the GP-6 melody line? I’d love to give the singing a try and if it sounds good, I’ll get it back to you. I , too , liked the shred solo at the end. It seems like a fun project.

I’ve uploaded a copy of the track without the melody to my GMail account. You can access it using this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-XK8L4TKETKTUU2R0FSQ0ZLQ0U/view?usp=sharing

I took down the original recording and tweaked the mix. Per RoryGFan’s suggestion I went back and re-mastered the GP6 drum track and also modified the balance on the guitars. I also double-tracked the “cello” parts in the intro and at the break to make it sound fuller.

Right on! I’m out of town starting Wed evening– I’ll be able to work on singing next week.  Plus, I’ll be over this dang cold. 🙂

      That was fun!

I wanted the lead at the end to continue.

How long did this take you? I really really wish I took the time to learn to read sheet music. Amazing.

It took me a couple of weeks to record. I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted to do going in (Santa got me the MXR Talk Box for Christmas and noodling around with it gave me the idea of using it in the chorus).

There are a total of 9 guitar tracks–including 2 with the talk-box and 2 with the E-Bow–plus bass, drums, and percussion (the maracas at the beginning were also generated using GP6).

BTW, for something REALLY different, I recorded the vocals using an Electro-Harmonix V256 Vocoder. It’s not on the Sound Cloud page but you can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-XK8L4TKETKTzdKSERVSHdfeFU/view?usp=sharing
