      Hello everyone.

I was wondering what is the best technique to organize and group riffs and licks in simple way using a computer software?
I have Guitar Pro 6 (which is more geared towards songs as opposed to a simple scratchpad of lick ideas).
I was thinking perhaps using Windows Notepad and just creating tabs using with ugly lines with tab character symbols.

      Tabbing anything is so tedious!
There is no midi guitars that are accurate or easy to use currently that I could find either, so seem to be stuck doing it manually.

      Thanks.

that’s a question I’ve also had in the past.

do you have doug’s Classic Licks lessons? If so he explains his method and it’s good. in fact its the only method I’ve ever heard a guitarist explaining, for how to organize licks.

If you’re looking for speed of writing things down then nothing beats pencil and tab paper, right? it’s got to be faster than typing into Notepad or similar.
At least with todays technology, you could then scan the paper to archive it digitally. rather than having a random stack of tab sheets with snippets on them.

The problem to me is that if I record the audio of a riff, then I forget how to play it. So I end up transcribing my own riff when I want to relearn it a year later. that’s the ultimate in facepalm. MAB once mentioned that he switched to videoing himself rather than just recording audio. Because then he could see how to play what he was playing. Probably to eliminate exactly this problem of forgetfulness.

I guess the apple pencil with ipad could make it digital to write tab like with a pencil, assuming there is an app to convert writing into midi tab. It might exist but havent heard of it yet.

      I'm an intermediate student of Metal Method. I play seitannic heavy metal. All Kale Seitan! ♯ ♮ ♭ ø ° Δ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬
And on the Seventh Day, Mustaine said: ∇ ⨯ E = - ∂B / ∂t ; and there was Thrash; and it had a ♭3; and it was good.

I write out everything I come up with that I think might have potential right away in GP. what’s more tedious, notating everything in software or “$#@!!! I can’t remember that awesome riff I came up with the other day?”

Notating in Guitar Pro gets easier with practice! 🙂
