      Post your imaginary band name.

I just saw a posting for a local band, named: For The Win.

Today I feel like if I started a band in the next five minutes, I’d call it: Below Average Taste

i was jamming with some dudes and we were just getting things going. we hadn’t discussed a name or anything yet. then we were hanging out together one night at a bar watching another band and the waitress asked us if we were a band. we said yes. and then asked what we were called. the other guitar player just blurted out robin hood. and it just sort of stuck. so we messed with the spelling and settled on Robynn Hoodd.

Back in 2009 when I was still in TN I played in an 80s metal cover band that every member was anywhere from 33-40. We called ourselves Long in The Tooth.

Back when grunge and alternative got big and you had all of those melancholy college rock bands with completely unmusical names, I kept waiting too hear of yet ANOTHER melancholy college rock hit of the week with the band name “The Stewed Prunes.”

Kind of an aside, but back in high school we were holding auditions for a singer and my friend Sean would hang upstairs and wait to see if the audition was going ok. If not, he would come downstairs dressed like a cross between the guys in Man ‘O War, and Ronnie Dio from the Holy Diver video with a re-curve style bow and one arrow ready for the draw, ask how the audition was going, and however we answered would reply,”That’s great. I’m off to hunt venison.” It truly did shorten up the time we had to spend with really bad singers. I miss that guy! If the internet existed back then we would have been famous from the stupidity of our everyday lives back then.

“Foo Fighters” must be the worst band name of all time. even grohl agrees.

“Around the time that I recorded the first FF tape (that became the first record), I was reading a lot of books on UFO’s. Not only is it a fascinating subject, but there’s a treasure trove of band names in those UFO books!” he said.

“So, since I had recorded the first record by myself, playing all the instruments, but I wanted people to think that it was a group, I figured that FOO FIGHTERS (WW2 term for UFO’s) might lead people to believe that it was more than just one guy. Silly, huh?”

Continuing, Dave Grohl insisted that a more appropriate name could have been chosen. “Had I actually considered this to be a career, I probably would have called it something else, because it’s the stupidest fucking band name in the world.”

the jam session with the new band went pretty well for a first time jam.

i’m not on board with pun based names which imply the band or members are over the hill, I had that problem locally too (“Lets call ourselves ‘Those Old Guys’ !” ummm how about, no) So.. last chance band, last call, midlife crisis, etc like that, don’t vibe for me, but others might like that style.

The diamonds & rust is interesting in that it reflects a song (altho probably not a great name itself), so maybe mash-up the song titles or chorus lines of the band’s 3 best songs.. like, American Midnight Rider, or American Wild, or Sweet Weekend Run. Ok those are a mouthful but that’s an idea to generate more ideas..

“Broken Road” – lol “I Broke my back lifting this amp and can’t get on the Road” ;-D Adult problems, lol

Because their name is a direct reference to a lethal accident (a crash at a flightshow) and the associated tune isn’t even that respectful to the victims. So, just looked it up and I see they did change the name on their first vinyl. I had both of these Japanese vinyl albums which I gave away for nothing as far as $$$ back when I left. This is why I didn’t like Rammstein when they started. Because their name is a direct reference to a lethal accident (a crash at a flightshow) and the associated tune isn’t even that respectful to the victims. Considering their popularity, apparently it kind of depends on how close to home it is. There is also a band called El Nino. Not sure how accepted that is.

I thought Rammstein was named after the large Air base in Germany.

El Niño requires the ñ. Nobody in Latin America is going to get upset about it. “The kid” or “the Child/boy”.

I thought Rammstein was named after the large Air base in Germany.

Back in 1996 at the Pinkpop festival when I first heard of them they made very clear references to burning aircraft falling from the skies. Anneke van Giersbergen (vocalist in The Gathering back then) mentioned she didn’t want to watch them because of this.

      Just checked wikipedia and found

The band called themselves Rammstein-Flugschau (Rammstein Airshow)[2] after the 1988 Ramstein air show disaster. Guitarist Paul Landers said the spelling of Ramstein with the extra “m” was a mistake.[3] After the band became popular, the band members denied the connection to the air show disaster and said that their name was inspired by the giant doorstop-type devices found on old gates, called Rammsteine.[4] The extra “m” in the band’s name makes it translate literally as “ramming stone”.

So erm… ramming stone it is then. Fair enough, as artists grow up they often no longer feel related to their early gory or aggressive lyrics and band names. After Max Cavalera left Sepultura he also mentioned that this band name no longer jived with how he felt and Soulfly was just a much better fit.

This is brilliant: Someone is putting on a concert made up of local (or sometimes better known) cover bands. Many have cool names. But the winner is the Van Halen cover band named …wait for it… In Halen.
