Blast from the past. For the past week I have been re-obsessed with this song, one of the absolute best in all metal. Written by Holocaust.

First time I heard this song was on a mix tape, 4th generation cassette copy, that a friend gave me bootlegged from the original san francisco garage ep tape of metallica .. wow, what a sound 🤯

Until today I didnt ponder the meaning of the song title, since I didnt know Holocaust was a NWOBHM band therefore european, I always assumed they were one of the many underground LA metal bands. Anyway, ‘small hours’ is a common european expression for i.e 2 am etc. so the evil song makes sense compared to other themes in evil blues/metal such as “after midnight”, “witching hour”, etc. So “The Small Hours” means somethin’ spooky goin’ on after midnight 🤭

small hours: the small hours (of the night) and the wee hours (of the night)
the hours immediately after midnight. The dance went on into the small hours of the night. Jim goes to bed in the wee hours and gets up at lunchtime.

Thanks to the theft of youtube/google we can see live bootlegs of Holocaust playing this, explaining that the song is about a seance, which I also didnt know before.

      Look hard at the darkness
      And you will see
Just call my name and I’ll be there

      You cannot touch me
      You would not dare
I am the chill that’s in the air

And I try to get through to you
      In my own special way
      As the barriers crumble
At the end of the day

      Dark rivers are flowing
      Back into the past
You are the fish for which I cast

      And what of the future
      What is to be
As the rivers flow into the sea

And I try to get through to you
      In my own special way
      As the barriers crumble
At the end of the day

      Do not take for granted
      Powers out there
Don’t step into the demon’s lair

      Time is an illusion
      Rising from time
Steep is the mountain which we climb

And I try to get through to you
      In my own special way
      As the barriers crumble
At the end of the day

I believe I have found a songwriting secret. Any song which has ‘darkness‘ in the first line of good verse lyrics is destined to be heavy. This song has such fantastic lyrics, genius in simplicity. Blacker than black! Darker than the darkest dark! 😁

      I'm an intermediate student of Metal Method. I play seitannic heavy metal. All Kale Seitan! ♯ ♮ ♭ ø ° Δ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬
And on the Seventh Day, Mustaine said: ∇ ⨯ E = - ∂B / ∂t ; and there was Thrash; and it had a ♭3; and it was good.

      Hello darkness my old friend…

My biggest fear is when I die, my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her they cost.
