I was listening to Blue Oyster Cult today and I had forgotten how good a player Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser is… listen to the solo here to Veteran of the Psychic Wars it’s great classic rock playing… takes a minute to get going and then he just rips!

      Robin Trower
what hendrix wished he would have sounded like.
(i know that’s blasphemy among a lot of guitarist)
and the only reason that might sound like i’m overstating my appreciation is because he has been sorely under-appreciated, overlooked and underrated.

Pat Smear. Apparently the other musicians in The Germs scene of punk were basically musically talentless except for him. Without his musical ability to support early punk, the underground probably would not have had the success it had. How could they write songs if they knew nothing about music? It seems the entire punk story is hyped about guys who can’t play, apparently just a smoke screen when it comes to Pat Smear. The much later story goes, that he was working at the SST record store in LA, when dave grohl (or Krist I forget) happened to start talking to him and realized who he was, and later told Cobain to invite him to join Nirvana, otherwise who knows, maybe he’d still be working at that store. Without The Germs having Pat Smear? later Nirvana wouldnt have been the same or existed? And also, Nirvana’s Unplugged filming wouldnt have ever happened which is now legendary for Nirvana fans.

It seems there’s a trend here, of guitarists overshadowed by either a very talented front person, or an insanely larger than life front person who otherwise has no talent. And yet somehow he remained mentally stable himself?

      interview quote

Pat Smear: I knew I wanted to play guitar when I was 12 and got Alice Cooper’s Love It To Death. Not just because of the playing (especially Michael Bruce’s rhythm guitar playing), but also because of that photo on the back of Glen Buxton’s white SG custom. Bowie released Ziggy Stardust soon after and had the coolest guitarist ever, Mick Ronson, who’s equally great at rhythm and lead.

And then Yes’ Fragile came out, featuring Steve Howe, who I think is the best guitarist ever. That opening riff of “Roundabout” was the first thing I learned to play. A couple of years later Queen released their first album that showcased Brian May who instantly became (and still is) my favorite guitarist.

Joan Jett of the Runaways, Steven Huffstetter of the Quick, Brian James of The Damned and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols were the guitarists who inspired me to actually learn to play well enough to start a band. My parents forced piano lessons on me when I was a kid and it was really easy for me to play by ear so I just did the same thing with the guitar, learning the parts from my favorite albums.

Pat Smear is hands down one of the greatest rhythm guitar players to walk upon the stage. The art of rhythm guitar is one that seems to only be discussed in secret by musicians who have mastered flash and are getting on to the lesson of foundation and understanding it’s complexity, and Pat is one of those players who just smile and nail it every time.

Should you ever meet him, you might be surprised that he is the kindest person alive and you may want to take notes on what he’s wearing, as it’s likely to be the style five years from now.

I know it says classic rock players but..

This man/myth/legend Guitar Shorty was the primary influence on what would eventually become Jimi Hendrix’s unmistakable sound. He was married to Jimi’s step-sister and when he played the Seattle area, Jimi would follow him around like a pup and soak up all of his licks. So when it sounds and feels like he is sounding like Jimi, it was actually the other way around. Real talk. Shorty is very approachable, always walks through the audience serenading the people (does not miss a lick as they take pictures with him and hang all over him!), and is a very nice man. Long Live Guitar Shorty! ;-)

Hopefully I can go see Robin Trower live later this month.

I really liked this writeup on one of the all time great sparse-playing classic rock guitarists (another hero gone early from alcohol) I’m too young of course to have heard this when it came out but anytime I heard this tone come on the radio, suddenly the mood got elevated into the stratosphere ..

And again a bit off topic of classic rock, my biggest beef with John 5 is that he keeps getting better all the time. 😮

While we are mentioning Fleetwood Mac let us not forget the other guitar player that was with Peter Green in the beginning. Danny Kirwan was an awesome guitar player and vocalist in his own right as demonstrated in the song Without You where he took lead on both.
