Cheap Guitars (with some exceptions) play just about as good as expensive ones. It's your ability combined with an awesome amp that makes the difference.

I finally got this posted somehow. Anyway I’ve been playing with GarageBand these past few weeks and I decided to do a cover for the first song I ever learned. Originally when I was a Metal Method student back in the late 80’s/early 90’s I thought it would be easier because it was slow. I discovered that there were many challenging aspects to it. I’ve seen Billy Gibbons play this live twice and each time he sort of played it different and I think when he recorded the original he just started jamming to the track. He also didn’t hit many of the pinch harmonics you hear on the record. I still am not up to the level I was years ago but here it is nonetheless.  It ain’t perfect. Also I have no idea who the vocalist is, it was included with the backing tracks I ordered. I stuck with the original amp sound I had on BB, a Mesa Dual Solo Rectifier with some fuzz pedals. I have the Gibbons’ original sound in ToneBridge but I decided to stick with the Mesa.

Thanks ROTM. I think the next one I’m gonna work on is “I want a new drug” by Huey Lewis and the News.

Hey guys thanks for all the positive feedback it’s much appreciated. Originally this past year the reason I started playing again was due to an argument my wife and I had about my playing. She had never known me as a guitarist and had never heard me play or knew anything about that time in my life. My attitude was “I’ll show her!” So I bought a guitar off eBay and an amp and began playing again.

Its very cool to hear the Hondo’s after watching them progress step by step thru a rebuild.
As for women it’s a bit strange to think that I’ll tell some story of a past hobby or project to a guy friend, and he will say “wow cool”, yet mention that to a girlfriend and she will say “pff, you didnt do that” or “you cant know how to do that”. Not sure what’s going on there, always assumed personally that it was a symptom of the so cal spoiled brat female as a real phenomenon. This has led me to discount the opinions of an entire set of people.. which is a bummer.. otherwise known as “shrug and ignore that snippy comment” and thus not take the ignorance too personally..

Hope to hear more from those Hondo’s and more songs!

I thought it would be easier because it was slow.

Pretty much sums up my song learning experience, ha.

Thanks for listening superblonde. The red Les Paul Hondo pictured in the video is the one I used for this song. During the first solo I was using the Vintage 59 bridge pup. During the second solo unbeknownst to me someone had been playing with the knobs and switched it to the middle Retrotron pup. That one was mistakenly wired out of phase and it sounds a tad bit thicker. I’m gonna use the RR V for my next cover.
