In an effort to keep me better organized and focused, I purchased the “practice_session_creator” as I think it will be helpful to have a pre-setup template for note keeping and progress tracking. However, I’m a bit confused as my practice_session_creator looks different than the one in the video. For example, it seems I have an additional “optional” topic which is AWESOME, and I understand how to change the time spent on this optional topic, track it, etc (defaults to 15min, at the beginning and end of the practice session, has its own tab, etc). This is GREAT! I also see an additional 30min “song practice” section at the end of each “hour” (which is not really any hour anymore, haha) but do not see any corresponding tab to track my progress in this area, nor a way to set the amount of time spent in this area. Is this on purpose or is it a mistake?

This has also added some confusion as to how to setup my practice session. My most important goal is to learn the songs for my band, so I would like to dedicate the most time towards this goal, and strangely enough it seems this additional “song practice” section has the most time dedicated to it (30min per day vs 20-25min per day for topic 1). Same with the “optional” topic, as again if defaults to 2x 15min sessions (which is more than topic 1) and adds to the confusion as according to the video, topic 1 should be my most important goal, which I would think would mean it would get the most time spent. This is confusing as I do not know how to properly organize my time with this system. Should I put “learn my bands songs” as topic 1, or should I just learn my bands songs during this “song practice” time? If the latter, do I need to create my own tab now to keep track of this time, since one is not provided? Or should I use “topic 1” for this reason?

Of course I can figure it out on my own and setup my own system, but I thought it would be good to get your feedback of the creator of this system. Hopefully Doug may stop by and provide some insight.

Thanks in advance for the help and reply. p.s. if it matters at all I’m opening this in Apples Numbers program.

Thanks for posting this Jon. I sent a message to Grondak. He’ll be able to help you with this because he created the revision to the program.  Come to think of it (Tony) you mentioned doing an article for the newsletter about the updated version.  Looking forward to it!

Hi Doug! Thanks for forwarding this on to Grondak. Perhaps you can touch on the points about the actual system, assuming you designed the system? Specifically these points? (see quote below) Or perhaps this is all updated system questions? Either way thank you and I look forward to further explanations on the system from either you and/or Grondak.

    Hi Jon,

I’d love to address your points! The practice session creator was the first thing I did for Doug and Metal Method to “give back” to the community. I’d been working on Speed and Accuracy and on my own efforts and saw a chance to update the spreadsheet to reflect the advice given in many of the other videos.  Let me try to work with you on the questions and ideas you brought up…

Here are the two main drivers for the changes:

    1. Speed and Accuracy– it’s suggested you do at least 30 min of the training per day on the challenge, so that meant a little divergence from the original 1-hour format.  Doug mentioned also that splitting the time up is better than running full-bore for a thirty minutes. I simply added an optional 15 minutes on to the beginning and end of the practice and then added an adjustment feature to the timing.
    2. Song Practice — at some point, Doug made a keen suggestion: practice songs for at least half your time.  I’ll paraphrase his rationale: ultimately, playing guitar is about playing songs, and they have to be songs you love, and if practice is about improving songs you love, you will end up loving practice.  Practice becomes something to look forward to. So, I added 30 min of “Practice your songs.”  I added it at the end…
    3. Of course, your hour turns into 2 hours by the time you are done with “everything you want to and should do.”  This is the “hour” you obviously found and I never found a great way to resolve this problem other than making practice songs your most important topic and making Speed and Accuracy your second-most important topic and then peppering the remaining time with less-important topics.  I didn’t like that at all, see below.

To Doug’s points: I did indeed offer to Doug to make a different Practice Session Creator topic.  I’m in the middle of restoring my studio to operational state after a pretty nasty water situation (no equipment damage…) so my evenings are shot right now.  I don’t have an estimate for when I’ll make the video BUT these topics will be addressed in it.

    To your specific points, Jon:

    1. No tab for song practice tracking — I didn’t think of this myself so thanks for the hint. I can add one rapidly.
    2. Adjusting time for song practice — I went with Doug’s suggestion of “at least half” which meant 30 min for someone who is not working on Speed and Accuracy.  I can add an adjustment for this, too.
    3. When to learn your band’s songs — during the song practice part.
    4. What to do with the five topics — you should use these for practicing Metal Method techniques, such as the list of the topics on the Define Topics sheet.  I get so much more out of practice when I spend time on scales or articulation. To me, nothing is better than a great-sounding song that came as a result of focused work on articulation.
    5. I’m glad it works in Numbers. 🙂

An offer: my email address is in my profile.  Send me an email and I will send you back a revision to the Practice Session Creator that addresses your points of adjustable song practice time and a tracking sheet for song practices. I’ll address these changes in the instructions on the “Define Topics” page to reduce the confusion for the next buyer.  Then, I’ll work with Doug and Metal Method to bring these ideas into the downloadable product.  I can work on the changes pretty soon (possibly tonight). How’s that?

I added the changes you asked for to a copy on my Mac; send for it and I’ll get the changes to you as soon as I see your mail.

I loaded up the PSC in Excel and I am able to edit topics and enter text in all cells except for Warmup. I am prompted for a Password to unprotect the sheet. I’ve included a screenshot for reference. Although I can manage warming up and it’s not part of the practice session, I just wanted to let you know about this issue.

The password worked, Doug, thank you so much. The program is fantastic and it has helped me stay focused. I wish I had this 30 years ago.
