The most ridiculous headline ever? Bono??!
      !! facepalm!
You know things are bad, when…

Music has ‘gotten very girly’, says Bono from U2
Singer tells Rolling Stone ‘hip-hop is the only place for young male anger at the moment – and that’s not good’

      Thu 28 Dec ‘17 11.34 EST https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/dec/28/music-has-gotten-very-girly-says-bono-from-u2

Bono has said that music has “gotten very girly”. Interviewed for Rolling Stone magazine, the U2 singer added, “there are some good things about that, but hip-hop is the only place for young male anger at the moment – and that’s not good”.

He went on to explain: “When I was 16, I had a lot of anger in me. You need to find a place for it and for guitars.”

Bemoaning a dearth of rock’n’roll in the charts, he said: “The moment something becomes preserved, it is fucking over. You might as well put it in formaldehyde. In the end, what is rock’n’roll? Rage is at the heart of it. Some great rock’n’roll tends to have that, which is why the Who were such a great band. Or Pearl Jam. Eddie has that rage.”

…Bono cited streaming as a factor in the supposed feminisation of music. “Right now, streaming is on the ad-based model,” he told Rolling Stone. “And that is very, very young, and it’s very, very pop. It’s dominated by frequency of plays, but that is not actually a measure of the weight of an artist … If you are a teenager and you are listening to whatever the pop act is, you’re probably listening to them 100 times a day. It’s a teenage crush, but in a year’s time you won’t care about that.”

Eddie Vedder has ‘rage‘ ?! OMG you know things are bad, when that is the comparison..

I wondered if anyone besides me was put off by that interview. Well, aside form the fact that I’ve never been very interested in the band whose guitarist has made an entire career playing the same riff over just about every song, I think Bono sounds like any old fart. I think that 20 years ago music was in the toilet for a variety of reasons but nowadays there’s lots of young people really clinging to classic rock and incorporating it in their own music. It may not be getting a lot of top 40 airplay but there’s Facebook, Myspace and tons of streaming sites that allow artists to market themselves in a variety of ways unlike the old way which was ONE way. Sounds like Bono and crew are just having a more difficult time with the new business model.

Good point.. as well as just a huge shift in what the audience wants..
Last nite I went to hang out at open mic nite, got there when there was a very talented guitarist doing a tommy emmanuel / ed sheeran type thing with a looper pedal and vocals, really good. the audience wasnt paying much attention. then the next guy went up, not a good looking guy by any measure. He put on a backing track thru his phone and sang “the voice” style doing over-singing vocal runs with lyrics. I didnt recognize the songs, dont know if they were covers or originals. Anyway 20 seconds into his singing act, a couple different groups of women in the audience started going crazy saying “omg” and “wow” and suddenly paying very close attention… to this pure vocalist with no playing skills.. meh! 😛 I mean at least ed sheeran himself plays and beat boxes a guitar well for attention..

Bono does have a point about rap tho, most of it is delivered ‘angry’ which really gets the audience energy up, whereas, even great blues playing just does not have that energy in comparison these days. I guess all the angry energy previously in rock has merged into death metal which is just basically growling and grunting screamo, which is not that relatable to most people.

Random tidbit from a band video. Bands not having two pennies to rub together..
maybe rock got ‘girly’ because the budding rockers of the past few decades aren’t hungry enough.

The truth is that the band [The Misfits] only had a dollar and some change collectively for hamburgers, which were 15 cents. Googy demanded a cheeseburger, which was 25 cents. “No,” Glen Danzig said, “you’re going to eat a fucking hamburger like the rest of us. We all want a cheeseburger, but if we all ordered cheeseburgers, we could only buy four. But if we order hamburgers, we can buy 7. Once you start bringing in more money you can order all the cheeseburgers you want, but til then you’re going to eat a fucking hamburger and you’re going to like it.” Arthur said “fuck you and your hamburgers Glen. This band sucks anyway.” And so ended their working relationship.
