      Everyone,

Doug talks about taking a video of yourself and sending to him or others to look at. Is there a past post of how to do this?

I have a S5 smartphone, coolpix 830 camera or a laptop I have never tried to take  video before.

I would like to get off on the right foot to learning guitar and attempt  to record myself (stumbling).

I’ve seen some of your videos and they are great.
      <p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks</p>

Also you can check to see if your camera can plug into your laptop to work as a webcam. Should be able to. That is a bit more work. Or for low-fi you can just use your phone for quick & easy videos, share them straight to youtube then post the youtube link in a forum message.

Using your smartphone for the video works well, that’s what I used on all my videos. If you’re making a song or want the most clear audio possible, use a DAW and then match up that audio with your smartphone video. You can do that easily even with Windows Movie Maker. If your just recording a general video like recording an exercise or something that doesn’t demand the most clear audio ever, just use your smartphone for both video and audio.

Also there are some direct connect stereo external mic’s for iphone at least. I have one on my wishlist but haven’t tried one yet. They were expensive when they first came out but now can sometimes be found cheap especially for older iphones (with old style connector, 4S or older). I believe they work with any phone app, not just their own custom apps. Like this, $16 online –

      by Tascam

I assume they were cheaper/simpler for older iphones because the old iphone connector has line-in on the connector so, easy to connect external stereo mic capsules. The new iphone connector is all digital so accessories are more expensive. Probably there’s similar mics for other phones too. Even a lapel mic would sound better than the phone internal mic.

this was my first attempt at recording video with audio thru my laptop’s webcam.
i used a video recording program called debut video capture but have found since that the windows movie maker program will also record from the built in webcam as well.
at the same time i was hooked up thru a usb audio interface and recording directly into reaper.
then after i stopped recording i dragged the video file into reaper & lined up the video with the audio the best i could.
then rendered the video & used windows movie maker to do the final video with the title and the fade in and out.
      then uploaded to youtube.
hope you find something that can work for you.

      That’s the right attitude. Sean!

BTW, I have an USB mixer connected to my laptop. It makes it really easy to send the sound in and out of the computer. When I want to record a video I just fire up Cheese (one of Linux video recorders) and hit the red button 🙂 On my mixer I have connected several guitars, a microphone and even my smartphone with some backing tracks when required… but I can also use the BTs on my computer easilly.
      Good luck!

That’s great solution, specially since most smartphones today record video in HD beating the usual laptop cameras by far!

I didn’t know this existed but it’s a nifty idea too- smartphone to XLR adapter (this would still be mono only) – the below is from a gear blog:

Seems promising SB. I love the idea of the Gorilla tri pod which is also mentioned in the article.

I work middles,  Eastern standard time. Leaving for work soon. I tried this morning taping with the Nikon 830 coolpix very easy great picture! Problem was the audio recording not great.

Next was the Galaxy s5 it is very easy to use also but it is super sensitive to light. Also I will have to buy or make a stand for it (gorilla tripod?) It’s  audio recording not very good either.

BIG BIG PROBLEM, neither one makes me sound like MAB or look like George Clooney! ! Definitely a problem.

Seriously though is  I rig an option?

Well, you want to record audio out of a modelling amp somehow. My practice amp for example, Fender Mustang (small, digital modelling one) has the headphones output, which if you only plug in halfway, you get the signal out plus the cabinet speaker stays powered. Some people like the iRig, yes – or it’s clones – they come with apps with good tones. Maybe someone can add whether or not these work while the phone is also video recording..

Even more low tech and quick & dirty, for one of the progress tracks I posted a while back, I just taped a lapel microphone (connected to laptop line-in, or could be used with a phone) to one of the amp’s headphone earbuds. That recorded the audio. To monitor while playing I listened thru the other headphone earbud. It didn’t sound horrible after adjusting the levels, a bit muddy, certainly not any worse than a cassette recorder. It still had okay guitar amp gain sound.

To sound like MAB though, hmm. Have to drink a huge glass of some pure liquid metal or something first perhaps.. liquid titanium?
