This morning I hit the pawn shop where I bought my Seville Les Paul last year and returned it to its home.

After playing Doug’s Vendetta I came to the realization that, while I love the look of a Les Paul, I prefer the 25.5 scale length. Probably because 95% of the guitars I’ve owned have been that scale length – the other 5% would be Les Pauls that I’ve owned. In addition, the guitar was a ’75 and the upper frets were worn to the point where I couldn’t get a good grip on the strings for bends.

The guy at the pawn shop said they couldn’t buy it back because he had at least 3 times as many guitars in the back as he had on the floor – and he had about 30 on the floor! Quite a lot for a pawn shop not specializing in music gear. So, I traded the guitar for a Fender Precision bass and am currently grooving while watching a recording of the Seahawks kicking the bejesus out of the Packers (had to work during the game, plus at 12:38 AM it’s nice and quiet for total enjoyment of the game).

I know what you mean, Paul. I have always loved the look of the Les Paul, but after playing my Schecter, the Les Paul doesn’t get much time anymore. It has been demoted to strictly a backup role.

Fender precision is my favorite bass model! I’ve played a bunch of squires and would love to try the premium version.

I understand what you mean about the scale! My Gibson X-Plorer Pro is gorgeous but feels like a ukelele to me. 😉

I’ve relegated my LP to songs with special tunings (e.g., D-A-D-G-A-D for “Kashmir” and Open-G for “Honky Tonk Women”) since it’s my only hard-tail guitar.

My biggest fear is when I die, my wife will sell my guitars for what I told her they cost.

Must be getting hard times for musicians these days. The recycle store here is filled with guitars, but most of them are entry level ones. And basses are super cheap, like $50 for an Ibanez.

      It’s around $140 for a bass here.

The pawn shop I go to has SO many guitar… there’s been an LTD Lynch tiger-stripe for $300 sitting there for well over a year. The bass I picked up had a price tag of $189. The were two other Fender P’s at the same price and an Ibanez starter at $89.

If I had the money, it’d be fun to pick up some of these guitars just to fix ’em up and donate ’em to the schools or something.
