We have not been able to get a handle on Forum spam.  Over the past hour I deleted 1,500 users which brings our active user count to less than 200.  My criteria for removing users is, 0 posts.  If I inadvertently deleted your account… oops.  I apologize.

We do have a Facebook group.  There are students that object to all things Facebook.  I understand that.  I sign on to Facebook less than once a week because I’m not a huge fan either.  However, they don’t have to deal with these security issues or if they do, it happens in the background.

If you’re wondering what happened to recent posts…  our last backup was over a month ago.  The Forum was in such a mess that we had to activate the backup which means that everything posted in the past month disappeared.

I don’t know if the problem is resolved.  If not, we’ll eliminate new subscribers and hopefully our small community will continue.  Thanks for your patience.

Man, it just wouldn’t be right to have your Forum without a Guitarsmurf. Whew! I made the cut.

Correct.  So far, it seems that I didn’t “space out” while making deletions.  But when I sit there for an hour, mindlessly deleting accounts, stuff happens.  Glad you survived.  We still have about 20 new spam accounts a day but I’m taking the time each morning to delete them.  I also installed a pretty good blacklist that seems to be catching the spam before it appears.  Don’t mean to be a pessimist but it’s only a matter of time before they’ll figure out how to defeat both measures.

You may be wondering, what’s the point?  The spam users all include web addresses in their stats for sites that they’re promoting.  Google and other search engines see these URLs appear all over the Internet and give them inappropriate ranking.

Still on my list of things to do.  I believe that I’m heading in the right direction… some loose ends to tie up first.
